Instant Runoff in Minnesota

Although Minnesota cities including Hopkins, Roseville and Duluth are interested in using instant runoff voting to decide local election contests, it looks like Minneapolis may become the first to do so. In November Minneapolis voters will decide whether to amend the citys charter to allow for Instant Runoff Voting for mayoral, city council and other city elections. I have been proud to publicly support this effort since its inception. I think it provides a great opportunity to see how this voting method works at the local level before considering its use statewide.

As Secretary of State I will work with local governments to find ways to remove all barriers, legal and technological, to the free exercise of this choice.
