Election/Appointment Process:
The Chief Election Officer is appointed by an Election Commission
comprised of eight (8) members and a chairperson. The commission can also
remove the Chief Election Officer for good cause. The commission is
appointed as follows:
-2 members appointed by the Speaker of the House;
-2 members appointed by the House Minority Leader;
-2 members appointed by the Senate President;
-2 members appointed by the Senate Minority Leader; and
-the Chairperson is selected by 2/3 vote of the eight members.

  • Prescribes voter registration forms
  • Determines ballot eligibility of parties
  • Approves new voting systems/ devices
  • Advertises statewide ballot questions
  • Prepares election calendar
  • Canvasses election returns
  • Handles state recounts
