The Chief Election Officer is appointed by an Election Commission
comprised of eight (8) members and a chairperson. The commission can also
remove the Chief Election Officer for good cause. The commission is
appointed as follows:
-2 members appointed by the Speaker of the House;
-2 members appointed by the House Minority Leader;
-2 members appointed by the Senate President;
-2 members appointed by the Senate Minority Leader; and
-the Chairperson is selected by 2/3 vote of the eight members.
Responsibilities:
- Prescribes voter registration forms
- Determines ballot eligibility of parties
- Approves new voting systems/ devices
- Advertises statewide ballot questions
- Prepares election calendar
- Canvasses election returns
- Handles state recounts
