Joleen
Garcia
Joleen Garcia joined the Center
for Voting and Democracy in January of 2002 as the
Community Education and Voting Coordinator in Texas. Joleen has
lived all her life in Texas. Born in El Paso, she graduated from
Texas A&M University and now lives in San Antonio.
Joleen has guided community
organizing on issues of women�s rights as well as social, economic,
and environmental justice. She is particularly devoted to developing
leadership and future organizers among youth. Currently, she is an
active member of the National Organization for Women, a volunteer
with the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, and a co-organizer for
the annual Xicana Xicano Youth Conference in San Antonio.
�My hope is that with the growth
of the Latino population comes greater opportunities to advance the
social and economic justice issues of Latinas and Latinos. Much can
be achieved for our communities by having true and full
representation at the policy-making table of government.� Joleen is
working to positively influence racial minority representation under
54 Cumulative Voting jurisdictions in Texas.
