IRV on the Ballot in Minneapolis

The Minneapolis City Council voted 11-1 on May 26 to submit to the voters a charter amendment to use instant runoff voting (IRV) for city elections. It will appear as a question on the November 7, 2006 ballot.

The Better Ballot Campaign is backed by a large coalition of community organizations and more than 40 elected Minneapolis leaders. FairVote Minnesota also played a key educational role in the city.

Winner: FairVote Board Member Hendrik Hertzberg

Hendrik Hertzberg, senior editor at the New Yorker magazine and long-time board member of FairVote, won a National Magazine award for the New Yorker on May 9th for his commentary in the "Talk of the Town" section.

Hertzberg is a particularly eloquent and persuasive advocate of electoral reform, whose dedication to reforms like instant runoff voting, proportional voting, and the new National Popular Vote campaign has raised awareness of the need to fix our broken elections.
