In 1996, Bill Clinton did well in Connecticut, as he did in the rest of the northeast. The 5% rise in projected Democratic performance between 1992 and 1996 helps explain the 1996 defeat of Republican Gary Franks (the first incumbent to lose in the state since 1984) and Republican Nancy Johnson's unexpectedly close win. Democrat Jim Maloney's re-election in 1998 and a landslide win for Sam Gejdenson indicate that this trend has not been reversed. Still, Johnson and Christopher Shays won easy victories in 1998.
