Dennis Kucinich Endorses Amendment 3
Congressman Strongly Supports IRV

Tacoma, WA -- Citizens for a Better Ballot received a letter of endorsement from Rep. Dennis Kucinich for Proposed Charter Amendment Three on the Pierce County ballot in November. Amendment three would replace the pick-a-party primary with Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) for county offices. Kucinich has been a supporter of IRV for many years and included it as part of his 2004 presidential campaign platform.

"I believe that our election system is in need of serious reform to expand and enrich democracy," Kucinich writes in his endorsement. "IRV offers a cost-effective way of insuring that the winning candidate is preferred by a majority of voters; it encourages voters to vote their wishes and not their fears; it promotes greater voter turnout and positive campaigning."

This endorsement provides important momentum for better elections for Pierce County. A champion in Congress for working families, Kucinich was a favorite of many local unions during the 2004 Democratic primaries.

Amendment three will lead to more positive campaigning, a shorter election season. It will save taxpayer dollars by requiring one election instead of two. Most importantly, it gives back to voters the choices they had under the traditional blanket primary while answering the legal challenges that blocked the "top-two" primary.
