Yes On Three

One city's experience with IRV was positive

For those county and major-party officials who say it would be difficult for Pierce County and its voters to use Instant Runoff Voting (TNT, 10-27), here's some solace from Burlington (Vt.) Free Press written after Burlington's first use of IRV for its mayoral race earlier this year:

¥ An exit poll showed voters overwhelmingly preferred IRV to the old voting system.
¥ Voters had no difficulty with the system, with no increase in spoiled ballots.
¥ IRV has many benefits, including giving voters a wider range of choices, eliminating the spoiler factor and decreasing negative campaigning.

The article also called IRV "a simple, common-sense reform that can greatly improve our democratic process. And the system worked flawlessly in Burlington."

It can in Pierce County, too. Hopefully, it will also pave the way for the rest of the state to follow, so that sometime in the not-too-distant future, we can be using IRV for all Washington elections as the closest thing to our old blanket primary Ð plus all of IRV's other benefits. I urge Pierce County voters to vote "yes" on Amendment 3 for IRV.
