Electoral Reform in New York City and its Impact on the Voting Rights Community:
How Proportional Representation and Instant Run-off Voting Will Affect Minority Votes
Hosted by:
Puerto Rican Legal Defense & Education Fund (PRLDEF)
99 Hudson Street, 14th Floor
May 29th from 2 - 4 pm

FairVote this year commissioned Lynne Serpe to assess the potential of choice voting and instant runoff voting for New York City elections. Lynne interviewed a wide range of New Yorkers and prepared an analysis laying out different roadmaps toward reform. FairVotes Rob Richie and Amy Ngai will join Lynne in presenting these roadmaps and responding to concerns and suggestions of voting rights leaders in New York City

As background to this discussion, New York City has a long history of using and considering different voting methods for its elections. From 1936 to 1945, the city council was elected by the choice voting method of proportional representation, which later was used for community school board elections. Later limited voting was used for certain council elections. Today the citywide primary runoff system is particularly controversial, triggering interest in instant runoff voting.

We hope you or a member of your organization will join us for a lively discussion with other voting rights advocates on next steps for electoral reform in New York City.
