Ground-Breaking National Election Reform Project Needs North Carolina State Director

FairVote, the nation's leading organization promoting political equality through structural electoral reforms, is seeking applications as soon as possible for directing its newly funded North Carolina Presidential Elections Reform Project. This project seeks to educate and mobilize reformers and communities of color in North Carolina on the value of replacing the state's allocation of presidential electors with the national popular vote compact (www.nationalpopularvote.com). The project will place a particular focus on highlighting how the electoral college dilutes the voting strength of the state's African American population and dampens participation among youths. The director will spend time in our national office before going to North Carolina to run the project for 2007. The position will likely shift into a national role after 2007 as this exciting project gathers national attention.

Qualifications: FairVote is a change-oriented organization with a young, hard-working staff with strong support from interns and volunteers. We seek an applicant eager to work in such an environment, and, ideally, with the following skills:

• Experience in a nonprofit, political, or policy organization.
• Professional or volunteer experience relating to voting or civil rights.
• Strong public speaking, writing and research skills.
• Ability to set deadlines and stick to them while working independently and autonomously.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to self-organize.
• Sense of humor and passion for voting reform.

Job Duties Include:

• Build grassroots support and educate the legislature on the value of a national popular vote for North Carolina.
• Generate local media attention and facilitate the involvement of North Carolina groups in this important project, including NAACP chapters, historical black colleges and the interfaith community, among others.
• Research and draft persuasive and educational materials on the value of a national popular vote, with an eye towards both a national and a North Carolina audience.
• Network with allied organizations, policymakers, and elected officials who are interested in advancing the national popular vote plan.
• Represent FairVote at civil rights, civic education and election reform coalition meetings.
• Travel may be required, including initial training time spent in Washington, DC.
