Idaho has become a very Republican state, with the party now having near one-party dominance of the state legislature. Helen Chenoweth had problems in her district in 1996, but it now is hard for Republicans to lose in Idaho – as evidenced by Chenoweth's comfortable win and the open seat win by Mike Simpson against former congressman Richard Stallings in 1998.
