  • Population: 571,143 (1990)
  • Republican district, next door to the 20th, a minority district with many urban and rural poor

 

Oregonís 5th

  • Willamette Valley, Pacific Coast
  • alternates Republican, Democratic
  • more than 70% of the districtís residents live in two unpredictable counties (Clackamas and Marion)ólots of independent, swing voters
  • 94% white; 1% black; 2% Asian; 5% Hispanic

 

Washingtonís 1st

  • crosses Puget Sound, but the sections are not linked by a major route
  • northern rural Kitsap County, north Seattle suburbs in King and Snohomish Counties
  • used to be Republican until redistricting; now competitive
  • 92% white; 1% black; 5% Asian; 1% Native Amer.; 2% Hispanic

 

Washingtonís 7th

  • crosses water, the sections are linked by a ferry route.
  • Seattle, southern suburbs and Vashon Island, all in King County
  • Democratic--one of the nationís most liberal districts
  • 76% white; 10% black; 12% Asian; 3% Hispanic

Washingtonís 9th

  • southern Puget Sound ó Tacoma
  • very evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, but 41% of voters consider themselves independents
  • not an easy district for incumbents
  • 86% white; 5% black; 6% Asian; 4% Hispanic
