VOTE YES for INSTANT RUNOFF VOTING

adphsm2.gif

State Rep Candidates endorse IRV ballot questions in two districts. From left to right: Peter Kocot (Democrat), Michael Aleo (Green) and Ellen Story (Democrat).

Our voting system has a big problem: it can let some candidates win with narrow support, sometimes as little as 30% or less. Fortunately, there is a solution: Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) ensures that the winner has the support of the majority of voters and provides a runoff count without the extra cost and reduced voter participation of a second election.

How it works: In a race with three or more candidates, voters rank the candidates in order of preference (1st choice, 2nd, 3rd, etc. ). If no candidate wins a majority, the votes for the candidate who came in last are moved to those voters’ 2nd choice. This process is repeated until one candidate wins by getting a majority of votes.
