Analysis of Campaign Costs in Vermont

Candidate campaign expenditures in 1996 Vermont House races: A comparison of single-seat and double-seat races

Based on campaign disclosure reports on file with the Secretary of State. These reports are not universally final totals, since some candidates never filed final reports (a few are only 10-day pre-election reports.) This analysis also includes the few candidates who ran and lost at the primary level, although they are obviously excluded from the "winners" analysis. Mean figures have limited accuracy due to the fact that candidates spending less than $500 are not required to file disclosure reports. A midpoint figure of $250 was assumed for all such races. Median figures are exact, however.

Average expenditure among all 291 House candidates
mean $1,082.65 median $773.50

Average expenditure of 138 candidates in all single seat races
mean $1,165.02 median $828.10

Average expenditure of 150 candidates in all two seat races (just coincidentally the same number as next)
mean $1,009.00 median $698.96

Among all 150 winners the average expenditure
mean $1,144.51 median $919.78

Among all 141 losers the average expenditure (this includes losers in the primary)
mean $1,024.52 median $664.98

Among all 68 winners in single seat races the average expenditure
mean $1,111.95 median $968.80

Among all 82 winners in double seat races the average expenditure
mean $1,171.50 median $919.07

Among all 73 losers in single seat races the average expenditure
mean $1,221.51 median $761.00

Among all 68 losers in double seat races the average expenditure
(again, just coincidentally the same as single-seat winners)
mean $813.05 median $559.50

For all 261 candidates in contested races the average expenditure (this includes even if only contested at the primary
mean $1,172.80 median $871.19

For all 123 candidates in contested single seat races the average expenditure (again, including primary contests)
mean $1,289.66 median $1,000.00

For all 138 candidates in contested double seat races the average expenditure
mean $1,068.63 median $778.50

Winners in all 50 contested single seat races the average expenditure
mean $1,389.18 median $1,340.34

For all 70 Winners in contested double seat races the average expenditure
mean $1,316.91 median $1,192.57
