The League of Women Voters of Oakland (LWVO) adopted a position in favor of instant runoff voting for local, single-seat elections.

The League used the concurrence procedures to adopt the position of the neighboring Berkley-Albany-Emeryville League.  The position, which resulted from a voting system study completed in September 2000, reads:

“Instant runoff voting” should be used in all elections involving more than two candidates for a single position.

Concurrence occurred after presentations by the Center's Senior Analyst Caleb Kleppner in support of instant runoff voting and by Alameda County Registrar Brad Clark, who discussed obstacles to implementing instant runoff voting in Alameda County.
