Job Announcement: Program Director

BACKGROUND: In 2004, spearheaded by Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA), the Mobilize the Immigrant Vote! (MIV) California Collaborative launched its work as the first-ever multi-ethnic, immigrant-based coalition committed to building the electoral capacity of community-based organizations in California. MIV contributes to the broader movement for social change by building the capacity of community-based organizations working with low-income immigrant communities of color to register, educate and mobilize their constituents to vote and link these efforts with their ongoing work; by building stronger progressive immigrant voting power; by shaping the debate on immigrant civic participation; and by developing models for collaboration. The heart and soul of MIV are the 150-plus community-based organizations across California who participate in MIV's annual campaigns. MIV is governed by a steering committee of six regional immigrant rights and anti-poverty coalitions including the Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition (BAIRC); the California Partnership (CAP); the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA); the Korean Resource Center (KRC); Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA); and Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN).

JOB DESCRIPTION: An unprecedented movement of immigrant communities and allies across the nation are speaking out for immigrant rights, yet the power of immigrant communities is still questioned. 2008 is a critical year for immigrant communities to flex their power and advance an immigrant rights and progressive agenda through the electoral arena. In 2007, MIV worked with thirty organizations across the state to build up their capacity to launch movement-building electoral plans in 2008. MIV is committed to supporting year-round civic participation so that elections work is integrally linked with the broader missions, issue campaigns and life of community-based organizations. Consistent with this value, we are seeking to hire a Program Director who will be a critical leader within MIV both for the 2008 California Campaign and beyond.

The following are the core responsibilities for this position:

• Develop and supervise the implementation of MIV's annual statewide capacity-building programs
• Coordinate the participation of the six steering committee organizations in developing and implementing MIV's capacity-building work, including facilitation and coordination of select work committees
• Coach and train steering committee organization staff to be strong local trainers and peer coaches
• Advance the political analysis and strategic direction of Mobilize the Immigrant Vote
• Support other MIV projects as time permits

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience and commitment to working with low-income immigrant communities of color and on immigrant issues
• Experience with community organizing and grassroots electoral campaigns
• Excellent skills in meeting facilitation, training/coaching, team-building, interpersonal communication, curriculum development, community outreach, political analysis and strategy, public speaking, and developing organizational systems
• Experience working in and/or organizing coalitions
• Strong analytical, research and writing skills
• Flexible and team-oriented approach to problem-solving
• Willingness to travel, primarily within California
• Bilingual or multilingual language skills a plus

Compensation: Salary negotiable based on experience. Generous benefits plan.
